Frequently asked questions
Are passphrases as secure as random passwords?
They can be. Each word from our ~440-word list adds about 8.8 bits, so 6 words give ~53 bits and 8 words ~70 bits. Add words rather than symbols to increase strength.
Should I use a passphrase I made up myself?
No. Humans pick predictable phrases (song lyrics, quotes). Security comes from the words being chosen at random, which this tool does with a cryptographic RNG.
What separator should I use?
Any works – hyphens are easy to type on phones. Separators mainly aid readability; the entropy comes from the words.
