How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?
Multiply the 12 digits alternately by 1 and 3 (starting with 1 from the left), add them, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10. For 590123412345 the sum is 83, so the check digit is 7.
What size should an EAN-13 barcode be printed?
The nominal size is 37.29 × 25.93 mm (100% magnification). GS1 allows 80–200%; don't shrink the height, as short barcodes scan poorly.
Is EAN-13 the same as UPC?
A 12-digit UPC-A is an EAN-13 with a leading 0. Most scanners worldwide read both.
