Frequently asked questions
Which barcode format should I use?
EAN-13 (or UPC-A in North America) for products sold in shops; Code 128 for shipping labels, inventory and anything with letters; ITF-14 for outer cartons; Code 39 for older industrial and ID-badge systems.
Can I make a real product barcode here?
You can draw any valid EAN/UPC number, but retail numbers must be licensed from GS1 so they are unique to your company. Use this tool once GS1 has assigned your numbers.
What is a check digit?
The last digit of EAN, UPC and ITF-14 codes, calculated from the others so scanners can detect misreads. Enter one digit fewer and we add it; enter the full code and we verify it.
SVG or PNG for printing?
SVG is vector, so it prints perfectly sharp at any size – best for packaging and labels. PNG is exported at 3× resolution for documents and web use.
